  2. Note: If using File Manager, make sure the current directory is set to that
  3.       of the executing .EXE.

  5. Installation and Registration
  6. =============================
  7. Beginning with the "family" of U4 uploads posted on or after December 12,
  8. 1995 there is a difference in installation procedure. Prior to this date
  9. all programs were independent--but now one program will recognize another.
  10.  
  11. New downloads are for evaluation purposes only and will typically expire
  12. in 60 days. Please register (see below) whenever you intend to keep a
  13. program.
  14.  
  15. It is important that a first installation be carried out correctly and it
  16. is recommended that a new directory be created for all new U4 downloads as
  17. the installation procedure for the first program will "object" if it finds
  18. old or un-validated copies of other U4 programs already on the system.
  19. Once the first program is installed things become less critical--but
  20. remember to always replace any old keyfile (U4Key.txt) with the new
  21. keyfile that came with the (next) program downloaded and installed.

  23. Likewise, after unzipping, programs should be "moved," not copied.

  25. Typical first-installation procedures to avoid problems:

  27.     NORMAL.ZIP downloaded from Net
  28.  
  29.         > move normal.zip c:\cleandir\normal.zip
  30.         > cd\cleandir
  31.         > pkunzip normal.zip
  32.  
  33.         *OR*
  34.  
  35.     NORMAL.ZIP unzipped in any directory, then, from the directory...
  36.  
  37.         > move normal.exe c:\cleandir\normal.exe
  38.         > move u4key.txt  c:\cleandir\u4key.txt

  40. Using an entirely empty directory is not necessary if there are no other
  41. U4 programs already on the directory. Also, once the first U4 program has
  42. been installed, other U4 installations can follow. Just remember to "move"
  43. (if necessary) -- not "copy" -- and use the latest keyfile.
